Composition ... Keys to a successful photograph

One key elements to create a good photographs is composition. Many people think “click the button” and they’ll get a good photo. Often they aren’t happy with the final result. The challenge is they didn’t plan the photograph or visualize what they wanted in their photo before clicking that button. Learning about composition techniques will help you make better photographs.

The two elements I’ll be talking about is combing patterns and the rule of thirds to create this image. By placing the subject in the upper right corner it drives your eye to the person, even though the patterns are both horizontal and the stairs are going at an angle away from the subject.

Symmetry and Patterns
We are surrounded by symmetry and patterns, both natural and man-made. Looking for them and using them make eye-catching compositions. Here I combined both vertical and horizontal lines to enhance the subject (man laying down).

The Rule of Thirds
This is when you divide your image up into thirds vertically and horizontally. Imagine a tic-tac-toe or grid over your viewfinder. At the point where the lines cross is a natural place where your eye tends to go. If you place image near where the lines intersect, your subject will be the main focal point in an image. Your eye is drawn to the many lying down, even though he is surrounded by the empty seating in the stadium and the patterns of the lines.

When you take a little time to design your image before just shooting the camera, you’ll be surprised by the images you create.
